"King of Cats", Irving Oil Refinery
Saint John, New Brunswick

LMC/QUALMEC was pleased to be involved in the King of Cats expansion at the Irving Oil Refinery, where we installed over 200 pieces of rotating equipment, ranging from one to 700 tonnes. Quality control methods were developed to ensure proper setting and maintenance of pumps, blowers, compressors, air coolers and fans. We also carried out over 150,000 man-hours of labour without a single lost-time accident.

  • Crude Vacuum tower, and exterior walkways, as well as all of the trays, packing and chimney trays supplied by Sulzer. The Crude Vacuum tower weighed 700 tonnes without trays.
  • Installation of a Crude Unit Atmospheric tower, exterior walkways and Sulzer internals, 480 tonnes without trays.
  • Installation of a RFCC Unit Fractionator, exterior walkways and Koch Glitch internals, 550 tonnes with no trays.
  • Installation of an Alky Unit Deisobutanizer, exterior walkways and the Koch Glitch internals, 270 tonnes empty.
  • Installation of a Hydrogen Desulphurization tower, with internals and catalyst packing from CD Tech, 150 tonnes without trays or catalyst.
  • Installation of a Medium Diesel Stripper Tower, with exterior walkways and Koch Glitch Internals, 70 tonnes empty with no trays.
  • Installation of a Heavy Diesel stripper Tower, with exterior walkways and Sulzer internals, 80 tonnes with no trays.
  • Installation of two Deasalters, 150 tonnes each.
  • Installation of 3 Alky Unit Contact Reactors, 100 tonnes each, with tube bundles installed. We also installed the motors, seals and tube bundles, and did the grouting for these reactors.
  • Erection of two Petro-Chem Furnaces, each with an approximate weight of 550 tonnes, including welding of coils and ducting fans.

Interquisa: Montréal East Installation

Qualmec participated in the construction of the new Interquisa refinery in Montréal East. Our scope of work included:

  • Field erection of a new 45.72-metre (150-foot) Born Canada Oil Furnace.
  • Successful, on-time shutdown operations, including first stage and second stage regenerators, to modify internals.
  • Installation of two Foster Wheeler Package Boilers and all auxillery equipment.
